Soft Contact Lenses

Soft contact lenses were first developed in 1959 by a Czech chemist named Otto Wichterle who successfully developed the hydrophillic (water loving) gel used to make the lenses. Since then Hydrogel lenses as they were called changed little over the years. Particular lens designs were different, however, aside from a few minor changes the material the lenses were made from stayed basically the same.

​Silicon Hydrogel materials are now widely available and offer a much higher oxygen transmissability. The development road has been rough, however, as silicon (derived from silica which is sand) although very breathable is fairly stiff and hydrophobic (hates water), this is not an ideal contact lens material.

Daily Disposable

The most convenient way to wear contact lenses!!! Great for holidays, sports and social wearers. Daily disposables have developed a lot since 1982 when the MIA-Lens company produced the first ever. We now have them available in silicone hydrogel materials with astigmatism and there are even multifocal daily lenses.

Monthly Disposable

Monthly contact lenses may be lower in overall cost than dailies since you purchase fewer lenses. You discard them every month rather than every day, so you only need 24 contact lenses every year. For the eco-conscious wearer, this also translates into less waste.

Lenses for Astigmastism

Toric contact lenses are used to correct astigmatism. Due to the nature of the condition the lenses must be orientated in a specific position on the eye. If the lens moves after a blink or if it is manually moved by the wearer rubbing the eyes then the vision will go blurred. It may take a few seconds for the vision to return fully.

Lenses for Presbyopia

Unlike multifocal lenses in specs, it is not possible look towards the bottom of the lens for increased reading vision due to the tracking effect of the lens, the lens will follow your eye wherever it is. As such the design philosophy is completely different. Each lens brand is designed slightly differently, however, the majority use a concentric ring pattern to correct the varying focal distances required.
