Glaucoma Assessment - The OSGaR Scheme
The Optometric Suspected Glaucoma Review scheme (OSGaR) is a shared care partnership with the Blackpool Victoria Hospital whereby patients diagnosed with Ocular Hypertension (OHT) can be discharged into the community for regular eye checks. Rather than the patient being cared for in the hospital setting. OHT is defined by a high pressure within the eye but no Glaucomatous changes (see our Glaucoma info page for more detail).
It can be arranged for patients who fall into this catagory to be seen in the practice on an annual/biannual basis rather than having to return to the hospital. We will perform ALL the diagnostic tests necessary including Applanation Tonometry, Visual Field testing and Optic disc photography complete with OCT scanning all at no cost to the patient under this NHS scheme. Any concerns that we may have would then be referred back to the consultants directly for further ophthalmological investigations.
This scheme is particularly popular with the patients concerned as they generally prefer to be seen in the community rather than at hospital clinics. We have lower waiting times and better access because of our position in the local community.
Glaucoma Referral Refinement Scheme
We also offer a referral refinement service whereby those patients with suspected high pressures can be seen in our practice for re-checks at no cost. This ensures detailed investigation of the intraocular pressure before any further hospital investigation is required. In a large number of cases this system prevents unnecessary referrals and visits to the hospital whilst still being careful to investigate those who may actually suffer with Glaucoma.
