Rigid gas permeable contact lenses (RGP)
Rigid lenses have gone out of fashion these days owing to the developments made with soft contact lenses in recent years. That doesn’t mean that they aren’t a useful addition to the contact lens fitter’s armoury.
These lenses can be individually made to specific parameters and can often give “clearer and crisper” vision for the wearer than any other form of vision correction, especially for those with high
prescriptions and astigmatism.
They can also be made from extremely breathable materials giving them somewhat of an advantage over the more standard soft lenses.
In fact for hospital post-operative cases or for those with corneal distortion, RGP lenses are often the only form of vision correction available, glasses and soft lenses just don’t work.
With the advent of new technologies it is now possible to electronically map the surface curvature of your eye and have a “best fit” contact lens digitally manufactured, bespoke for the individual, a level of accuracy just not possible with soft contact lenses.
So don’t think that because soft lenses are the newest and more popular variety of contact lenses that they are the most suitable for you.
