Irregular cornea lenses
Sometimes contact lenses are the only answer to visual problems and it is not unheard-of for patients to be referred to our care from the hospital eye services for contact lens fitting.
The majority of these cases are sufferers of corneal ectasia (distortion) of which the most common is Keratoconus. Others include Pellucid Marginal degeneration, Post LASIK ectasia and keratoglobulus.
Another medical indication for contact lens fitting is post surgical either following trauma, cataract surgery complications or after a corneal graft has been implanted.
Quite often all of these patients see very little with conventional glasses or contact lenses, however, with a correctly fitting irregular corneal contact lens their world can be turned upside down. These lenses can provide vastly improved vision and can help them to lead a normal life even following major ophthalmic surgery.
On the other hand patients may have had a previous injury to one eye leaving an unsightly nasty scar or may have been left with permanent double vision. Cosmetic contact lenses are a valuable asset to these people. A lens can be custom painted to suit the other eye hiding that nasty scar or curing the double vision whilst not drawing attention to it. This is invaluable for the confidence and social acceptance of the individual involved.
We have invested greatly in this area of expertise in the past few years and are very happy to say that we currently fit contact lenses to a number of people in this situation. We will endeavour to do the same for anybody who needs this extra special care.
